With a vast discography featuring two RIAA certified albums and numerous chart topping singles, it came as no surprise that The Fillmore music venue in Charlotte packed full of fans excited to see Chevelle on Wednesday evening.
Two opening acts – Middle Class Rut and Nothing More – hit the stage before Chevelle. Both bands delivered a profound sound, with a notably interactive set from Nothing More, yet showgoers remained relatively low key… at least until the room went black and the stage back-lit silhouette outlines of each of Chevelle’s members. Multi-talented vocalist and guitarist Pete Loeffler only had to strum the first note of “Grab Thy Hand” for the expectant crowd to rupture into cheers. Pete founded the alternative metal band in 1995 with drummer and brother Sam Loeffler. The two were joined on stage by bassist Dean Bernardini, who is also Pete and Sam’s brother-in-law.
The fraternal trio quickly picked up the pace with “Jars,” a single from their chart topping 2009 album Sci-Fi Crimes. A couple more songs followed before Chevelle broke out one of the band’s newest songs from La Gárgola, their April 1st album release for which the tour is in support of. The single, titled “Take Out The Gunman,” was recently announced as the #1 song on Billboard magazine’s Mainstream Rock chart for May and it became obvious that fans had already familiarized themselves as they sang along. Other select songs played from La Gárgola included: “Hunter Eats Hunter” and “An Island.”
Chevelle balanced out the new songs by performing many older and familiar fan favorites from throughout their seven album discography. Some highlights included “The Clincher,” “Forfeit,” and the more recent “Face To The Floor,” – the last song played prior to the encore. After a brief fake exit, Pete returned to the stage accompanied only by his guitar. With entirely red spotlights and hundreds of cell phones and cameras pointed directly at him, he performed an astonishingly beautiful live rendition of “The Red.” Reuniting with his brothers, they performed “Send the Pain Below,” the song considered to be Chevelle’s most successful hit. With crowd surfing and headbanging galore, the night closed out on an intense note with “I Get It.”
The Charlotte show was the last night of the La Gárgola tour, but Chevelle is scheduled to perform as part of upcoming music festivals: 98 Rock Fest on April 25th, Welcome to Rockville on April 26th and Rock On The Range on May 17th.
